Passivex C

Part No: RXSOL-38-2401-220

Gentle passivation liquid for safe metal passivation without toxic fuming

Category

RXSOL Passivex C is a concentrated, water-based citric acid passivation liquid designed for the chemical passivation of stainless-steel surfaces following fabrication, welding, machining, grinding, pickling or cleaning.

The product removes surface contamination and assists in the removal of free iron and other iron-containing residues from stainless-steel surfaces, promoting the formation and restoration of a stable chromium-rich passive oxide layer.

Unlike conventional nitric-acid passivation products, RXSOL Passivex C uses citric acid technology and is suitable for applications where a nitric-free passivation process is preferred.

ASTM A967/A967M specifically recognizes Passivex C immersion treatments as chemical passivation treatments for stainless-steel parts.

Application
RXSOL Passivex C can be used for passivation of:
  • Austenitic stainless steel
  • 300-series stainless steel
  • 304 / 304L stainless steel
  • 316 / 316L stainless steel
  • Stainless-steel tanks
  • Stainless-steel piping
  • Process vessels
  • Heat exchangers
  • Pumps
  • Valves
  • Stainless-steel fabrication
  • Food-processing equipment
  • Pharmaceutical equipment
  • Chemical-processing equipment
  • Marine stainless-steel equipment
  • Welded stainless-steel assemblies
  • Typical post-fabrication applications

Particularly useful after:
  • Welding
  • Grinding
  • Polishing
  • Machining
  • Cutting
  • Fabrication
  • Pickling
  • Removal of fabrication contamination
Dose

How does Passivation using RXSOL Passivex C work?

Stainless steel naturally develops a thin, chromium-rich passive oxide film when exposed to suitable oxidizing conditions.

During fabrication, however, the surface may contain:
  • Free iron
  • Embedded carbon steel particles
  • Iron oxide
  • Grinding debris
  • Welding contamination
  • Machining residues
  • Surface deposits

These contaminants can initiate localized corrosion and reduce the corrosion resistance of the stainless-steel surface.

RXSOL Passivex C provides a controlled citric-acid treatment that helps remove undesirable metallic contamination and supports formation of the passive chromium oxide film.

In many applications, thorough water rinsing is sufficient to stop the acid treatment.

A separate neutralization step may be used when required by the validated process.

If neutralization is employed, it should be validated to ensure that the treated stainless-steel surface still meets the required passivation acceptance criteria. ASTM A967 recognizes rinsing with or without a separate neutralization treatment.

Remarks / Precaution

DENGEROUS FOR ALL BODY PART

NB. Before disposing the passivating fluid it should be neutralized. ( Caustic / Soda ash /  slaked lime )

In accordance with the latest E.E.C Council directives
R 34                        :               Causes burn

S2                           :               Keep out of reach of children

S 26                        :               In case of contact with eyes rinse immediately with plenty of wate and seek medical advice

Note

It also helps to detect pinholes after welding.

Why Passivation required ?

1. Stainless Steel owes  its corrosion resistance to the formation of a chromium oxide surface layer but this happened due to presence of oxygen , And if the oxide has been stripped, perhaps by pickling, then the oxide layer takes a short time to reach its full thickness and this can be accelerated by passivation.

2. The heat tint produced by welding is not only unsightly but the thicker oxide layer includes chromium from the surface of the metal, lowering its corrosion resistance. Pickling both removes the oxide layer causing the colour tints and a thin layer of the underlying metal to restore the original properties.

3. Iron Contamination
A major cause of corrosion in service is iron contamination which can arise from a variety of sources. These include using tools made of mild or constructional steels like fork lifts being a common cause for abrasives that contain iron and any tool that has previously been used on non stainless steel. Cross contamination can also arise from grindings and debris created whilst working close by on steel, either  in the workshop or on site. Iron contamination is not always obvious, if it is suspected it can be detected using the ASTM A380, ferroxyl test. This is a rapid test in which a solution turns blue in the presence of iron. Pickling is a very effective method of removing this iron contamination from the surface.

Skin protection
Hand protection
Wear suitable gloves. Chemical protection gloves are suitable, which are tested according to EN 374.
For special purposes, it is recommended to check the resistance to chemicals of the protective gloves mentioned above together with the supplier of these gloves. The times are approximate values from
measurements at 22 ° C and permanent contact. Increased temperatures due to heated substances, body heat etc. and a reduction of the effective layer thickness by stretching can lead to a considerable reduction of the breakthrough time. If in doubt, contact manufacturer. At an approx. 1.5 times larger / smaller layer thickness, the respective breakthrough time is doubled / halved. The data apply only to the pure substance. When transferred to substance mixtures, they may only be considered as a guide.
